Hiroki Okano: composer and music producer, born 1964

Hiroki Okano started his solo music career in 1987. In 1990 he signed an exclusive contract with German recording company IC DIGIT, which distributes his albums worldwide. By fusing together natural sounds, digital sounds, and the sounds of a variety of folk instruments from all over the world, he renders a feeling of awe and thanks to nature based on his own Japanese sensibility. The resulting creations have been highly appraised.

He has produced numerous musical pieces for TV commercials, TV programs, and image products. In addition, he has created a sound installation performance in which more than one thousand original wind chimes are used to create a sound space that communicates the feeling of being in nature. He has performed this at 20 venues both at home and abroad, and international media have featured this performance as a work of one of the ambient artists who represent Japan.

He has been trailblazing force in a number of citizens’ movements, been an organizer for various environment events and festivals including the Rainbow Festival, and been involved in such events as the International Dolphin & Whale Conference, International Underwater Film Festival Yokohama as music director, and a concert in Japan that used solar electric generation.

As a prayer for a world without any wars, in 2000 he took a torch lit from the Hiroshima Peace Flame, a flame originating from the embers of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, to the Glastonbury Festival in England and to the Imperial War Museum in London, and in 2001 he held a peace ceremony using the flame in cooperation with the Hawaiian legislature at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

In 2002 he visited Afghanistan shortly after an air raid to hold a peace concert together with street children in Kabul. In 2004 responding to a call from Chief Arvol Looking Horse, a Native American leader, he worked as a member of the secretariat and helped organize the World Peace & Prayer Day 2004 which was held at Mt. Fuji with aboriginal elders from around the world being invited.

In 1991 he began performing with the folk instrument ensemble group Wind Travelin’ Band and has performed many concerts with them in Europe, the United States and Japan. They also released an album, ISLAND OF BOWS, with R. Carlos Nakai, a performer of the Native American flute, and followed that up the next year with a successful joint tour.

In 1994 Okano formed the TENKOO ORCHESTRA. At the major RAINBOW 2000 event he performed with former Yellow Magic Orchestra member Haruomi Hosono, and in 1999 and 2002 he performed at the FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL. The late Dave Goodman, a former producer for the Sex Pistols, spotted Okano’s talent and helped arrange for him to perform at the world renowned Glastonbury Festival UK, where he has now performed for more than ten years.

In 2002 Okano joined with Celtic musician Nigel Shaw and Native American Guillermo Martinez to form the trio called BAMBOO CEDAR OAK, and they have performed around the world, particularly in Europe. They participated in the 9/11 memorial concert at Riverside Church in New York.

His recent solo work includes directing the music for the JUNKO MAEDA Paris Collection and the Kyoto Fashion Cantata, since 2004 and 2005, respectively. In 2009, he received special permission from the Maltese government and performed and made a recording at the 5600-year-old Hal-Saflieni Hypogeum, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site located on the Mediterranean island of Malta.

In 2010 he provided a musical composition for the Osaka exhibit at Shanghai Expo. He also played an opening track at Africa Day Symposium at the United Nations University in the presence of the Crown Prince. In 2011, he composed a piece for world famous violinist, Iwao Furusawa, and wrote the theme music for the Hanshin Tigers baseball team that is played before the start of games at Kyocera Dome Osaka.

At present, based on the theme of Resonance of the Earth, Okano is active as a composer and passionately performing his compositions at sacred spots and natural heritage sites around the world.
